The Cat's Moustache Logo

No doubt many people will be interested in how we came up with the name, "The Cat’s Moustache".

This came about when Ruth and her husband were in the famous book market in Istanbul In one shop an exquisite piece of illuminated calligraphy dating from the Ottoman rule in the 16th Century caught their eye. Ruth asked the shop owner how the artist managed to produce such an intricate and delicate piece of work. The owner replied that the artist had used a brush made of ...then he hesitated trying to find the word in English and said ... a Cat’s Moustache. Ruth realised that he meant a brush made of cat’s whiskers and told the shop owner this who laughed. She went on to tell him that in the UK, we have a saying that to call something "the Cat’s Whiskers" is to say it’s the best, and that the ancient calligraphy was very much the best. For some time afterwards, everytime Ruth or her husband saw anything that was really good, they would say it was "The Cat's Moustache" and the phrase stuck with them.

Our aim was to make the gallery as inviting and accessible as possible and we have used light colouring throughout so as to make the gallery light and contemporary but have tried to retain a traditional feel.

These photographs show a selection of handmade arts and crafts on display in the shop. They range from oil and silk paintings, to glass, ceramics and textiles.

We hope you will come and visit the gallery soon to see the range of art and craftwork on display.
